Hello, hope this is the right place to ask... I'm right handed, but left eye dominant. Is it possible to change my eye dominance by training, or is that a myth? I've heard about people covering their dominant eye while shooting, but I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes. If anyone here can give me advice, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm lefty and right eyed. Shoot your pistol Right handed with 2 eyes open and your rifles left, at least that's what I do (in reverse).

i was left eye dominant being a right handed shooter i trained myself to use my right eye strictly...i noticed an increase in accuracy once i forced my self using my right eye only with pistol and rifle. i guess it depends on the shooter i did this due to me being uncomfortable and lacking accurate shots.

a co-worker puts a translucent dot (5/8" dia) over the left (dominant) lens and shoots both eyes open. this forces the right (weak) eye to take over as the left is unable to focus on the target. I believe they sell these "dots" for skeet & trap shooters.

I have the same problem and just force my left (dominant) eye shut while shooting right handed.

Left eye dominant as well, I've just forced myself to shoot both eyes open on handguns.

Rifle and shotguns, shoot left handed - but can go right hand/eye if I have to. Accuracy suffers though.

Coaches will tell you if you want to become the best shooter you can be to learn to shoot from the dominant eye. As you look at the better competitive shooters the higher the competitive level the fewer cross dominant people are winning. There are no cross dominant shooters in the Olympics. Google cross dominant shooting there is lots of stuff written about it.

My son is the same as you. We haven't tried training his right eye to be dominant but I can tell you that he couldn't hit the proverbial broadside of a barn shooting righty, but is a dead-eye (no pun intended) shooting lefty.

I think you are in for a struggle trying to change but please do keep us posted.

Thnaks for the advice, everybody. I'm going to try shooting with my left eye closed for a while, and see if I get any better. If not, I might give left handed shooting a go

I am cross dominant and I do it all right handed with one eye closed :-(.
I tried changing last year and it was a huge fail...... I wonder how much easier it is doing it the right way?!?!? Good luck!

I have the same problem and just force my left (dominant) eye shut while shooting right handed.
And I thought I was the only one who did that. :D

Seriously though, one day I'm going to train myself to shoot with both eyes open.

I have the same issue, I'm right handed but left eye dominant. It can be overcome, but takes a lot of practice. My instructor actually taught me to shoot with either eye depending on which hand you're shooting with-i.e. use your right eye shooting right handed and left eye when left handed. His reasoning behind this was when shooting from behind cover, you expose less of your head and body. Bottom line, over the years, I've learned to shoot both left and right handed, using the left or right eye depending on the gun hand (with a handgun).

As for a rifle, I use my right eye and shoot right handed. I was at a rifle course not too long ago, the instructor kept insisting that I should shoot left handed. I kept insisting that he let me try it right handed. He finally left me alone when I shot the tightest groups in the class....

There is a great book called "The dominance factor". no way of changing your dominance but training can change if there is a great difference between the eyes. Many instructors can work with you to see which style works the best. One way would be to learn to shoot with the dominant eye and non dominant hand. if they does not work and you are pistol shooter, use more of an isosceles stance and turn your head to the right if you have a left dominance to put the dominant eye in front of the sights. Remember that you are relearning a practiced skill and can take time to adapt. Same as going from one martial art to another and relearning basics. Can be tough but the end can be rewarding.
