I know that all interstate transfers need to go thru an FFL. But, I was under the impression that only handguns needed to go thru the FFL in my home state (in this case DC, Mr Sykes). I thought that if I buy a long gun in MD or VA, from an FFL, that the DC FFL didn't need to be involved. Am I mistaken?

Let me know what you find out. I hate paying 135$ to transfer a gun that costs me 250. to buy, although I received as a gift a shotgun from my dad. He gave it to me [in MD] and then I scheduled a visit to the Firearms registration office. I was escorted in and did register my shotgun without having to use Mr Sykes. The appears to indicate non-regulated firearms do not have to be transferred via FFL. This seems to exclude all non-regulated long guns from requiring a FFL transfer, however definitely check the law.

: That seems to be the issue.

If they are willing, a MD/VA FFL can sell you, a D.C. resident, a long gun, but they have to be very careful as D.C. has some convoluted laws as to which long gun and which configurations of long guns are legal.

We deal with Mr. Sykes a lot and always call him when in doubt about the legality of a sale to a D.C. resident.

Thanks A1! That's what I thought. I'm fairly up to speed on DC's long gun restrictions and was thinking in terms of basic hunting style shotguns and rifles. I know almost anything black or scary looking is a no-go in the district.

I think your question has been answered, but a VA or MD FFL can sell a long gun directly to a DC resident. However, you can't take possession of it from them until you have the approved registration paperwork back from MPD. It's a bit of a PITA since you might have to make a couple of trips back and forth to the FFL if they're a stickler doing all the paperwork in person, but you won't have to drop a hundred and change with Sykes.

For the record since I have done this four times. If you buy a long gun at a Va, Pa, Md. FFL you do not need to go through DC FFL Sykes.

If you don't use sykes you have to go to the selling store twice. Once to purchase and have them fill out the DC form, and once again ten days later to pick it up.

It really depends whether the $125 sykes fee, pus say $25 to ship insured is worth your time on a second trip to the store. I did have a shotgun I bought at Cabelas in Pa shipped once because I was up there and bought it on impulse and it was exactly what I wanted and $150 for sykes and shipping was cheaper than returning to get it.

If they are willing, a MD/VA FFL can sell you, a D.C. resident, a long gun, but they have to be very careful as D.C. has some convoluted laws as to which long gun and which configurations of long guns are legal.

Any handgun legal in maryland is legal in DC as long as only a ten round mag is sent. We use the Maryland list.

As far as long guns it is the old assault rifle ban. There are some models explicitly prohibited by mode and then a list of banned attributes which is pretty simple. I have a mini 14 in DC, it is legal.
