How does one tune with a Standing Wave Ratio?

I use one of two Antenna analyzers which shows SO much more information

For example... If tuning for SWR alone were truly an indication of an antenna's performance, a dummy load should be a perfect antenna...

This is a common misconception in the (CB) radio community

True. One doesn't. One tunes with a SWR meter which is all I ever did and got what I thought were satisfactory results. While I'm aware that there are other things I could have done to increase the performance of the radio-antenna combo I never chose to do so.

I have a midland handheld with an external antenna. You don't need it installed. The base of the antenna is magnetic and i pretty strong. Bought mine back in the day and gathering dust in the garage. If you can't find one by sat, you can borrow mine. I'm in Laurel, MD

If you were closer I would absolutely take you up on this. Im just getting off work though and I dont feel like driving out that far. I will be checking the local radio shack today to see if I get lucky and find the midland and antenna.

Short term a handheld is great. From experience wheeling you want something mounted so it does not bounce around in the cab and break. securing just the mic is a whole lot easier than an entire handheld.

CB radios @ Rausch are relatively ineffective. They will only work when you are in line of sight.

That being said, I have used Midland CBs in the past with good success, as well as the Cobra unit that is all integrated into the handset. A decent antenna tuned with an SWR meter will get you satisfactory results.

Where are you located? I have a couple old units floating around you can have.

    Im in Dundalk.

Sooooo..... I was driving around looking at pawn shops and I drove by Essex Guns. I guess I got sort of side tracked. Anyways this thing came home with me. I don't understand, I went looking for a CB and I came home with another gun instead. Is there meetings for this kind of stuff where I can get help?

FYI I already had the mag they didn't sell it to me with that.

Did I just hijack my own thread?

Whatever radio you decide on, get a quality antenna and cable. Jeeps can be finicky with antenna mounting. Swing gate is where most people mount them. Be sure to ground the cb mount via 10-12 gauge wire to the body. The gate itself is not always sufficient. If you mount on the gate put it a far left as possible and try to get at least 60% of antenna above the roof line. Believe it or not these make a difference in tuning and transmit/reception quality

    CB radios.

I brushed the dust off of two of 'em at my Mom's house, a couple of weeks ago.

    Lafayette 525 and Lafayette 625.
There are a couple of Turner "Power Mics" up there, too.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.... the good ole days of running that Lafayette 625 with an Antenna Specialists "Big Momma".

Breaker, breaker, 19. What happened to the '70s?????????

    :lol2:
