The new legislation, dubbed the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, rests on four pillars, according to Lautenberg's office:

    1. It requires anyone selling ammunition to be a licensed dealer.
    2. It requires ammunition buyers who are not licensed dealers to present photo identification at the time of purchase, effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.
    3. It requires licensed ammunition dealers to maintain records of the sale of ammunition.
    4. It requires licensed ammunition dealers to report the sale of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to an unlicensed person within any five consecutive business days.

    What the hell?

Obama To ‘Evaluate” Banning Online Ammunition Sales

The Hill reports at least some good news, the legislation is unlikely to make it into law.

Gun reform has become one of the most controversial issues in Washington in recent years, as the gun lobby has evolved into one of the most influential powers on Capitol Hill. President Obama and Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, have been careful not to call for new reforms in the wake of the Aurora, Colo., tragedy. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said last week he has no plans to bring up gun-control legislation, and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said the same.

However, Sen. Lautenberg’s partner in crime, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy said

Law-abiding gun owners and shooters should support this legislation because it hinders criminals from abusing the Second Amendment right that our nation promises and could save innocent lives in the process.”

    Sure, when ...

So, the implication is that they have drafted this Bill in reaction to the Colorado shootings?

Did they even bother noticing that no provision of this bill, even if it were in effect, would have done absolutely nothing to prevent that tragedy?

Doesn't matter. They don't care. It's all about not letting an opportunity go to waste. They know that the vast majority of the general public is far too ignorant on the subject to realize it will not lower crime or make people safer in any way.

Some pro 2A organization that has the funds and the access should conduct a survey/study on people in prison for firearms related crimes, asking them where they got the weapon, and if/where they bought ammo.

Dunno about the rest of the world, but here in my town, I'm really doubting the typical Baltimore yo legally buys weapons OR ammo, let alone "stockpiles" it.

So according to the article the current administration wants to requite a photo ID to buy ammo

"It requires ammunition buyers who are not licensed dealers to present photo identification at the time of purchase, effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians."

... Yet they don't want to requite a photo ID to vote. Whats wrong with that picture?

That would really suck for .22LR match ammo. The only place I know of that consistently stocks Eley or RWS is Champions Choice. Is there a local vendor for this stuff?

Decades ago you'd have to have a local dealer special order it for you.

With as large as the mailorder/internet ammo sales industry is, I doubt this has a snowball's chance in hell of becoming law ... every member of the house of reps is up for re-election ... they'd be toast

They know this is wouldn't prevent another mass shooting. Their real goal is to incrementally make gun ownership so difficult, laws that are so confounding, that they eventually make all guns illegal. Once they achieve this utopia, it will be like China, Russia, other crime free countries. I say tongue firmly in cheek.

They're fools. Let them grandstand gun and ammo control right before the elections. It worked wonderfully for Al Gore.

Keep your fingers crossed that history repeats itself.

    See you at the polls.

Judging off the image in the press conference it is based off of the Colorado shooting, He may have had "thousands" or rounds of ammo but how many did he actually fire. Point being if someone with ill intentions was to buy 1000 rds for just that. They are going to be weighed down so bad they wont even be able to walk.
