Sadly, there's members here who would have turned him in just like the valet and then patted themselves on the back.

Sadly I feel you ate correct, then to take the plea deal and then have the felony and lose all gun owning rights ,I believe we have heard many say that play stupid games win stupid prizes and to take the only means you are guilty, well from the optiions listed I wonder how fast many here woud jump on the deal.

****ed up gun laws are on a state by state basis yet a felony conviction for a state violation is a nation wide offense. Pretty ****ed up when what is legal in your own state but not another ruins your life.

I've always wondered this too...was it always the case that a state felony is a federal felony? Are ALL state felonies Federal felonies? How about the reverse?

Have always been curious about this. So one state legislature can create a felony independent of the remainer of the US, yet create a national effect on an individual? Is there an extra level of review or scrutiny at the US AG level for a piece of legislation that declares a felony?

There is some stuff you really need to know, the gun laws of NY, NJ and DC are among those things.

I am just amazed at how many times something like this has happened. There are handbooks available specifically addressing the laws in each state regarding concealed and open carry; there have been endless discussions and news about problems in NJ, NY, and a few other states over this very subject, yet it continues to happen regularly.

If this were a criminal leaving his gun in view of a valet who then called the cops, we'd be calling him a dumbass.

We use the line 'responsible gun owners' and 'law-abiding gun owners' only when it fits our agendas and purposes. As responsible gun owners it is our responsibility to know the laws everywhere we decide to carry a gun, regardless of whether we agree with those laws or not. Sorry, but one can't be a responsible gun owner without showing some responsibility. I dislike NJ tremendously and avoid it whenever possible, but when asked to go there for a 2-day job last month, the very first thing that came to mind was NOT TO TAKE ANY GUNS......

You're right. But, stupid laws are stil stupid laws. I agree with "states rights" and think that there should be more of them. But as SNI said, a law in one state should not carry the felony weight of the nation.

Atlantic City and NJ have the excess prosecutorial, judicial, and penal resources to prosecute this and potentially jail him for a year or more? For a (stupid) mistake? Gosh, they must not have any real crime to address. Yeah, right.

I imagine the casinos/hotels there would like to send a clear message to anyone thinking of bringing a gun into their establishment. Bad for business and they probably own the cops and the prosecutor.

Stupid laws aside, having a gun in your car "inadvertently" at any time, and especially crossing stat lines, shows very poor firearm handling / management.

So it's against NJ law to bring any firearm into the state regardless of if it's unloaded, cased, etc.?

Not really. But, New Jersey's laws are definitely not in favor on the firearm owner.

I was born and raised in New Jersey and take guns back home to shoot with friends while I'm visiting.

I don't take any magazines over 10 rounds and my AR's stay in Maryland because in the configuration they are in, they are illegal to have in New Jersey.

Using a bit of common sense will prevent a whole lot of head aches.

If gay people can boycott Colorado for a marriage law they don't like, maybe gun owners can boycott NJ for their messed up gun laws. Don't give any money to the state of New Jersey or benefit any of its businesses. Don't buy gas, food, water, or anything else there when driving through. Avoid the toll roads to deprive them of your money.

Maryland will be New Jersey in a few years if we don't get off our A$$e$ and support pro gun candidates. We need to get busy folks. Contact candidates and let them know your position, regardless of party. We got off easy this year, because it is an election year. If we don't get involved, we will be in the same position as New Jersey, New York, California and Connecticut in a year or two.

Less then a few years. The new HQL and SB281 just put Maryland neck and neck with New Jersey.

I tell people that all the time when I get my balls busted about being from Jersey.

When I start drawing the parallels, I get a kick out of the look on their face when the realization sinks in. :D

Pretty much. Also make sure you dont have a single round of those cop-killing hollow points rolling around in your trunk. FOPA applies if you are driving through but NJ has been known to arrest people and only allows FOPA as a defense at trial. Add to that the multitude of small poorly trained township police depts and corrupt local judges and it becomes a minefield.
Just take I81 and I84 and save yourself the tolls. Still leaves you the risks of crossing the hostile territories of NY, CT and the land of the massholes.
