While it's legal for home owners to carry a firearm on their property, can said owners use lethal force to protect life and limb?

There was a guy in Baltimore that went outside and shot a guy on a ladder that was trying to break into the 2nd story window.

Not a very good idea. Better to stay inside, call 911 all the while telling the 911 operator that you are in ever increasing fear for your life and please, please, please send police.

    That's number 4

It is indeed. It just puts the emphasis on the word "retreat" which avoidance encompasses. For those who haven't read the book, the "retreat" admonition applies even in SYG jurisdictions -- the idea is to avoid the need to use force but if you have to, the "retreat" evidence will be very helpful in avoiding the legal nightmare of criminal charges.
