I like the 2 part putty style that mold to fit your ear canal, seem better than expanding foam, stay in much better and great for doubling up with over the ear type muffs.

I like ear muffs myself. You look kinda silly, but it is easy on and off, they don't get dirty if you lay them on the bench/ ground, and they are hard to lose.

I generally double up for rifle shooting, plugs and muffs.

I bought a vial of the howard leight foamies, they look kinda bullet/peanut shaped and have been using the same pair for months for cutting my lawn.

haven't really found a plastic/rubber set of earplugs yet that don't irritate my ears some just due to fitment issues.

I hardly ever double up unless i am doing something which might push off my muffs, I used to use the simple orange corded plugs for years, but it was a pain to take them in and out all the time.

Either cheap muffs at Walmart or the squishy earplugs are better than the $60 electronic muffs I have. The electronic muffs do not form a tight seal around my ears but the cheap $15 walmart muffs do.

For the super concerned you could double them up with the squishy earplug design for another $5.

Surefire EP3 sonic defenders here. 24db

Still hear range commands, but muffles gunshots well.

The 3M earplugs. Great for the range, hunting and tactical. They give you the option of NPR of 23 or 7. There is a toggle on the earplug that switches from a constant protection of 23 to 7. But even if there is a loud impulse the plugs have a filter that clamps down to protect your hearing. Its a poormans active headset/hearing protection. My uncle is VP of 3Ms industrial safety division and gave me a handful of these a few years ago. They work great, I wouldn't use anything else,
