I have been looking on Gunbroker for a couple of 22's to defray the cost of my 15 and 10 year old shooting every caliber I have. I won a deal for two C&R 87A's sold together for $112. last week.

The metal and bore were immaculate but I did notice one had some faint tiger stripe showing through, I decided to refinish it since these are only plinkers and an occasional squirrel hunt for the boys.

I was shocked after refinishing the first one, what beautiful tiger stripe this 22 actually had that for 70 years was hiding under all that varnish.

before and after. Not the greatest photos but you can see the stripes okay.

I think that's Tiger Stripe Maple. You can't tell these Maple trees from others standing with the bark on them. My uncle (a bed maker by trade) had several buddies who worked for logging companies in Maine. Whenever they would cut down a Maple and find that it was a Tiger Stripe, they'd set it aside for him. They made beautiful bedposts.

That's a great find...probably worth a lot more than you paid for it!!

What an incredible find! You did fine work cleaning them up too.

I have the fabled (and mis-named) "Garand Trainer Prototype" Model 87M (for Musket), it looks like a standard walnut stock so I doubt I'll find much.

Please share your techniques and products for cleaning and refinishing the stock, that sucker is gorgeous!

BTW, the 87s sometimes develop cartridge lifter issues, if thats the case, swap out the paperclip-looking spring before spending money on anything else.
