Newbie

Hi,

I'm new to the site and interested in blackpowder/muzzleloading. To purchase my first firelock I would like to sell my great grandfathers old double barrel shotgun. Does anyone know a dealer in the area interested in antiques?

Thanks,

Steve B

Welcome aboard Steve.

Never fired a firelock or flintlock, but I'll bet it's a fun experience. Stick around, become involved and post here. Pretty soon you could post your Grand Dad's old shotgun in the classifieds. But I have to ask...why would you want to part with your grandfather's gun?

I agree, hang on to your heirloom. There are plenty of sidelock muzzleloaders out there to be had that people bought when they were the only thing going for black powder hunting seasons (and it should have stayed that way) who abandoned them and went with in-line M/Ls.

Whoa, hold up, hoss. Just my dumbass opinion here, but if you sell great-grandpappy's old smokepole to buy some shiny stainless modern composite-stocked in-line Triple Se7en-burning Nancy Boy gun, I can just about guarantee the old man's ghost is gonna piss in the touch hole every chance he gets. You just keep that old shooting iron and take care of it. 'Sides, unless it's something like a Greener or a Purdy and in really nice shape, you probably won't get enough for it to be worth the trouble.

Now, what kind of firelock are you thinking of? Meaning, of course, what do you want to do with it? To answer this, you should start a new thread in the Black Powder subforum.

Oh, yeah, and welcome to the funny farm.

Welcome:

1) Don't sell that double-barrel (or sell it to me).
2) What kind of muzzleloader do you want? Inline, sidelock, percussion, wheellock, matchlock or flintlock?
3) What is it supposed to be used for?

Welcome, and ditto everyone else on not selling Grandpa's gun. Mine passed away before I was born and his guns are about the only connection I have to him (not counting my mom of course ) They've been in the back of closets for most of the last 45 years, but I've recently taken much more of an interest and have been cleaning them up, replacing worn parts and shooting them. I'd be kicking myself now if i'd sold them 20 years ago...

Just another opinion... Again, welcome to the forum!

I've gotta agree with the concensus here, don't sell it if it was your Great Grandfather's... that belongs to the family and hopefully you can pass it on to the next generation someday. A son or daughter or nephew or whoever shows a genuine interest in guns and/or history.

Remembner, they aren't making any more of those old ones.

And welcome to mdshooters!

Welcome. I'm going to pile on like everyone else. Don't sell your great grandfather's gun. Even if you have no desire to shoot it, keep it for sentimental reasons.

Wow, I'll have to rethink selling that gun I guess, although honestly, I do have so many other hierlooms from him and it's just been sitting in a box for so long...

I want to start reenacting and treking so I'll be getting a piece that matchs my new persona

Welcome to the clown show, Haha.

I'll be more than willing to take anything you don't want in calibers from .25-06 to .338 Win Mag, just let me know, I'll be home in December if you can wait that long (I desperately need a moose/bear gun).
