Ft. Meade Rod & Gun Club update (range ofcrs needed)

The FMRGC is looking for some certified firearms instructors to join so they can be qualify to be given range badges by Ft. Meade range control. We have to have someone with a range badge to oversee the use of the ranges during shoots. The pool of range badge people needs some expanding.

The club gets limited use of the ranges on the weekends (basically one range about every other month), but it is actually pretty easy to get range use during the weekdays if the ranges are not being used(!) I've been invited to impromptu 300 yd range meetups on weekdays, but my schedule usually won't allow it.

Individual FMRGC dues are $25 the first year, $15 for renewals. You must be an NRA member, but you can join for only $25 though the club.
Anyone can join, not just military or Meade employees.

FMRGC is part of the Associated Gun Clubs, so FMRGC membership will allow you to purchase an ACG range badge.

The club is also trying to organize more "rod" events, to include saltwater trips.

Membership details are here:http://www.fmrgc.20m.com/

PM me if interested; I can get you in touch with the membership folks. No "sponsorship" needed, but it helps if you can be vouched for. Meetings are on base the first Thursday evening of each month(see the website); you can also just show up to a meeting and join (like I did when I joined).

how hard would it be to have access to any long range stuff over there? beyond 300 yards.

Attending a meeting would be good, but is not needed. I've seen people join during the weekend range days. You can even just mail in your application.

I don't know about the archery range; I've never used it or even seen it, but I know the club has access to it.

Unfortunately, there are no more scheduled weekend range days for 2009. If anything comes up that I can attend on a weekday, I'll let you know, or post about it here.

If the range is open on a weekday, I understand we can have at it as long as someone can sign for and supervise the range as a Ft Meade Range Officer.

To be a "Ft Meade Range Officer" you:

1) have to have a firearms instructor certificate from the NRA, police, military, or similar.

2) attend an orientation at Ft. Meade range control.

IIRC, civvies dont have access to the sniper range. The only range civvies can use is 25 yd and only with lead free ammo.

Nope, the club (and its members) gets to use any available range.

Lead free ammo is only for the pistol ranges. Or you can also use a rimfire bullet trap on those ranges.

OK:

All folks who are interested in joining, I will be attending the club's monthly meeting THIS THURSDAY at 7pm on post.

Quote:
The Club meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 pm at the Outdoor Adventure Center (Bldg. T4) at Ft. Meade, MD. which is located between Baltimore and Annapolis MD. From Hwy 295, take Rt. 175 east toward Ft. Meade. Turn right into the main gate at Ft. Meade on Reece Rd (or the Mapes Rd entrance if you have a DoD decal). [You will need a drivers license, proof of insurance, and car registration with you to enter. Your vehicle is subject to inspection, and no firearms, ammunition, etc. are allowed.] Take the first left turn (or left at the first light if entering at Mapes Rd.) onto Ernie Pyle St. You will go through five STOP signs (three if entering from Mapes) and over a bridge across Rt. 32. Turn right at the "T". The Outdoor Adventure Center is the dark brown building on the right, just before the firing ranges. The 2 Pet Care Center buildings are adjacent to the Rod & Gun Club.
Either PM me or reply here and I will post a tally of who will be attending. I have two likely now per PM.

Some clarifications:
- the instructor certification needs to be "current" to get qualified as a Meade range officer
- the range officer who signs for a range is not supposed to shoot on the range that they are supervising unless another range officer is present to take command of the range during that time (i.e., don't get caught)
- the club has to police their brass and can't use the base trash cans at all (I still can't figure that one out)

Yes, the ranges are on base property, but the club uses the "back entrance" to get to the ranges. No non-mil firearms allowed on the "base proper" per base commander's order.

OK, now I seem to have contracted some sort of flu, and will not be going tonight. I PM'd the folks who confirmed tonight's meeting.

If you can make the meeting tonight, I urge you to still go. The club is very friendly, and I joined by walking in "cold" to the same sort of monthly meeting.

If you also can't go tonight, you can still join by mail and, if credentialed, later get the range officer card.

Yeah, anyone can join. The club has around 150 members right now. And only about 5 on average show up for the weekend shoots . .. .

Got my Family card in mail yesterday.
To my supprise, we can't use lead ammo. Now need 2nd mortgage to get lead free ammo to use. Now I know why dues are so "CHEAP".

Lead free ammo is only required on the pistol ranges.

The club also has rimfire bullet traps that Range Control approved to let the club fire .22, etc., on the pistol ranges.

There is no lead-free requirement for the 300 and 600 yard ranges.

Sorry about the confusion.
