I just got into shooting this year because all my out-of-state co-workers shoot, but I wonder how much of a disadvantage I'm really at being a first-generation shooter. How did you guys (and gals) learn to toss lead?

My father served in the Corps and taught me to be a rifleman. By the time I was 15 I shot better with irons than most people I knew did with an optic. Things have changed a little as my company became better and we all got into long range. So far I have been on my own with pistols.

My grandfather taught me how to shoot when I was about 8 years old, then when I was 12 my brother-in-law let me shoot his handguns and that was when I became completely addicted to guns.

You are not at a disadvantage. It just takes time, instruction on fundamentals, and practice. Natural talent does not hurt either.;)

    I learned from my Dad.

Although I have had alot of good instructors in the past in LE, I would say that I'm 90% self-taught.

When I was in LE, I had other instructors beg me not to teach the recruits to shoot the way I did, or to even let them see me shoot. My style is apparently somewhat unconventional in the eyes of your standard LE instructor.....I still shot 98 -100 though, every time. Making your shots count is all that matters.
