Good to see that Sue Peschin of Ceasefire MD is "just another concerned citizen" and not a professional lobbyist.

    From the above article:
They're also NRA members. "It's the best way to know what's going on," Peschin said.

Interesting that Lisa Delity picks and chooses when she wants to invoke her maiden name of Miller.

Looks like she didn't learn anything from the Leah Barrett/Gail Gun creature.
There's no reason not to ban assault weapons
    Mar. 19, 2004

State Sen. John A. Giannetti Jr.'s decision to oppose Senate Bill 288 -- legislation that would ban semiautomatic assault weapons such as the Bushmaster XM15 rifle used in the October 2002 sniper shootings -- is at best disturbing, and at worst political prostitution ("Assault weapons ban likely to die in Senate," March 4).

A February Gonzales Research survey found that 82 percent of Sen. Giannetti's constituents support banning all assault weapons. The Maryland Chiefs of Police Association and former Maryland State Police Superintendent David Mitchell support SB 288 because there is no reason to allow military-style, semiautomatic assault weapons in civilian hands.

Why would Sen. Giannetti (D-Dist. 21) of Laurel go against law enforcement and the wishes of the people who elected him?

It's time to stop playing politics with public safety and pass an effective assault weapons ban. Prince George's middle school teacher Lisa Delity, who lost her brother, FBI Special Agent Mike Miller, to assault weapon fire in 1994 and at whose school a student was shot with an assault rifle by the D.C.-area snipers, said, "I am shocked and saddened that Sen. Giannetti finds the lies and distortions of the gun lobby more compelling than the safety of his constituents. If he would walk in my shoes for just a minute he would vote to get and keep these weapons of war off our streets and out of the hands of criminals. Shame on Sen. Giannetti."

    Shame indeed.

I don't think this deserved its own thread and I figured this thread is apt enough.

The Brady Campaign has a little intarweb poll thingy full of baseless statements followed by questions somewhat related the subject of their baseless statements.

    Brady Bunch said:
Since the expiration of the federal Assault Weapons Ban two years ago, there has been a significant rise in violent crime and homicides.

    * 2. How strongly do you agree with this statement: Passing an assault weapons ban must be one of the top domestic safety priorities of the 110th Congress.

How about we tell them what we think.

I told them what I thought and here is the canned reply I got:

"Thank you for participating in our 2007 Legislative Priorities Survey, your feedback will help the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence get a strong start to the new year. We are so grateful for your support.

Capitalizing on the seismic shift on Capitol Hill, your Brady Campaign is going on the offensive to advance our legislative agenda to strengthen US gun laws. Americans are looking to us to turn our electoral victories into concrete action to get guns out of the hands of criminals.

We will succeed in this endeavor in the same way we succeeded in the 2006 elections — by bringing to the fore the voices of reliable, thoughtful Brady Campaign members like you.

Thanks to your participation, we will show that Americans like you demand that strengthening US guns laws be at the top of the congressional agenda.

Help us build on our voting majorities in both the House and Senate to pass a new ban on military-style assault weapons, closing the gun show loophole, and other life-saving gun laws by making a generous contribution today.

By working together, we can create a nation free from gun violence, where all Americans are safe at home, at school, at work, and in their communities.

    Sincerely,
    Your Friends at StoptheNRA.com"

I can't believe they got through a whole page without the words "click here to donate."

Oh wait, never mind, I see they do ask for money. For a minute I thought it must have been a spoof site.
