View Full Version : Arrow rest?

My new bow came with a cheap shoot through plastic rest. My buddy has a whisker biscuit and it works much better. But with the fletching impacting the hairs, doesnt that slow it down some? I came across this type in my reseach.
and it seems like it has all the advantages of a biscuit, plus more benefits. I just got into archery and eventually plan to hunt.

The ones with the bristles all the way around do slow down the arrow a little, but more importantly (if you shoot a lot) it will slowly damage the fletching. I personally run one called an Octane Hostage, its like the one you pictured except it has 3 sets of brushes instead of the 2 sets with the plastic ramp at the bottom. If you get a 3 point one just make sure to go through all your arrows and index the nock properly so you don’t get fletching strikes on the plastic bits of the rest.
Take a look through Huntersfriend. It is a great site with a ton of archery info and buyers guides.

Are you planning on getting out before Jan 31, 2012? Do you plan on sticking with the bow hunting or are you afraid you might lose interest and the thing will be come a show and tell piece? If you can wait, aren't in a rush, and plan to be serious about this then I say save a few more bucks and get something that will last you forever. Bow season doesn't start back up until next September 15, meaning you have plenty of time to save up that extra $60. QADs are problem free, do not interfere with arrow flight at all, and will last many years. If you plan on upgrading to a nicer bow in the future remember accessories are interchangable. It might save you a few bucks in the future if/when you do decide to go all out top of the line. All Im saying is don't buy something cheap that you may not be happy with.
Just my $.02.

Very good points. I do not plan on hunting with it until the Sept season, but plan on shooting it regularly until then. I was just kind of testing the waters with a cheaper bow, but I'm fairly confident I will stick with it. I dont think I will ever be a die-hard bow hunter, but I think it will be a good filler between other gun seasons.

Exactly why i just bought one. I want more hunting and dont always get to go during gun seasons.
Not to mention, this was taken in the back yard a few years ago before i started hunting.

Are all the QAD dropaways as good as the rest? I see midway has some starting at 50 bucks.

Thats the exact reason I bought a bow. More time in the woods and you can hunt the entire rut. I do love bow hunting and shooting more than I ever thought I would though. That a big ol doe btw.
the NAP 1000 is a great arrow rest and can be had for 40 dollars. Its not a full containment drop-away like the QAD but its been around a long time and is very solid. I highly recommend it.

No, the lower priced QAD's are junk.

So I bought a trophy ridge biscuit. I bought the large because I am using larger aluminium arrows. Well even with the large, its still a little tight, how can I loosen it a little? I saw on trophy ridge site you can loosen the set screws and spread it, but that will only make it tighter wont it?

If you install it yourself, pay close attention to the details.

Drop aways are the future!!! lol. I had a whisker bisuit, i could prolly hold 2" at 20 and 4'" at 40. Went to the capture rest like the picture. Tighten my groups some but not as good as i want. Went to a qad drop away and boom, groups touching at 20 and 2" max at 40. Its has for me to shoot the same spot at 20 because it is possible and i have screwed up arrows hitting them. Cut some fletchings off. Never a robin hood but some broken nocks. My advise for a lower priced drop away but still a very good one is the NAP apache drop away. I bought one for a buddy of mine for xmas. Installed it. He had a whisker biscuit. He is now holding tighter groups and less arrow defelection.
If you do install yourself, do yourself a favor and buy a tune kit. What you need is the RS string level combo. Puts a level on your draw string and your arrow. I never had one when i first set up my drop away. I made it to where it looked level by eye. Man was i surprised when i put the level tuning on them, little off. That little bit of off level makes a difference in arrow flight and even deflection.

Thanks for the info guys! A buddy of mine who lives pretty far out helped me sight in my bow the other day for about 25-30 yards with the current whisker biscuit on there, By the time i had to go it was Just a C hair off, I moved the sight one line over but havent had a chance to get back out with the bow. But he at least had me, a total N00b shooting 25-30 yards off his 10ft high Deck and banging bullseyes pretty consistent. I just got the QAD drop rest the pther day, i havent installed it yet and while I was thinking about installing it myself i want to make sure i am dead on at 25-30 Now that i have moved the sight and go from there. If I do not install the rest myself, should i go to Dicks or bass pro? Or is there another place?
I do need to go somewhere to get another bow set up for my 17yr old as well. I need to swap a cam on that one and have a D-loop installed, maybe even swap out the peep as its kinda cheezy.

Today I installed a QAD Ultrarest HDX on my bow. It looks and feels like a quality piece of hardware. It mounted up on my PSE Bow Madness without any fuss. Tomorrow I'll make the final adjustments and shoot some arrows. I'm upgrading from a Wisker biscuit. I saw a lot of endorsements of the QAD in this thread and figured I'd give it a try.
