What type of gun would everyone suggest for a home defense/tatical shotgun. I've been told to go with the tatical Remington 870. What would you all suggest.

Big Brad has a Rem 870 for sale here....$160 I think. Put a shorter barrel on it and you have one of the world's most popular home defense shotguns.
Plus you'll still have the 28" barrel to shoot clays with. :)

I have an Ithaca Model 37 pistol grip military marked. I found it a couple of years ago at Timonium. For the life of me, I don't know how so many people missed it. Maybe it was Karma. It has that beautiful 2 stage trigger.

I use a mossberg 590, but a remington is a fine gun as well.

Lots of flavors of the 870 around. It's a solid choice.
So is the Mossberg 500 and its variants.
Make sure you look at both, you may like the way one feels over the other (quite literally, the fore-end on both have different textures).

I have several 870's and a 590 - both are good solid pumps. If you want to go auto - try a benelli M2 (or M1 - which will likely be found used. I have 2 and love them. The tactical model with ghost rings and removable chokes is the way to go here).
The 1100 is pretty good as well, BUT the benelli is 1st class.

an 870 or 500 with a 18" barrel is kinda the standard, with just about everything made for either, there are also a lot of other tactical styled pumps and semis around. Depending on location, don't overlook a decent SXS coach gun like the stoeger. It is dirt simple to use, is smaller and lighter than a 18" pump, but has a 20" barrel, in many cases can be loaded and fired faster. With some practice to make sure you know which trigger goes to which barrel, you can load 2 completely different types of shells to meet different threats, ex. bird shot in 1 barrel to ward off feral dogs, and buck or slugs in the other if the bird shot is inadequate, or 2 legged critters are the problem. I would rather bring the sturdy little coach gun with me when camping, or to keep in the truck when predatory wildlife is a concern. If I think 2 barrels of buck or slugs is not enough, Ill pack an AK.

I currently have a Benelli M1S90 w/ SureFire Forend on it, great gun.
I'm going to be replacing it with the Mossy 590A1 14" SBS as soon as the paper work clears. I wanted something a little shorter for in house use.

So what's going to happen to the M1S90?

She will sleep soundly in the safe!

An 870 is a great choice. I recommend spending a few bucks extra for the Police Model over the HD model. You can often get great deals on police trade in 870s. Or you could go all out and get a new 870P Max like I did. :D http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/870pmax.htm
If you decide you want an autoloader, you might want to look into a Beretta 1200FP or 1201FP. I have the 1200FP. Beretta owns Benelli. The actions on the Beretta and Benelli are nearly the same, and many of the parts even interchange between the two. The difference is, the Beretta costs half as much. The 1200 and 1201 are really unsung heroes in the self-defense shotgun world.
Clean 1200FPs often can be had for around 400 dollars. Good luck.

I would love to throw a "Master Key" on my AR... lol...
I have a Maverick 88/Mossberg 500 frankengun that works great for busting clays. I have never had a malfunction with it ever, had it since the week I turned 18. Remington 870s are good to, I just like the Mossberg controls better.

Dont you watch movies, a typical shotgun will cover about a 20x20foot room in 1 blast at least wounding if not killing the bad guy in it (acrding to the movie). With that type of fire power who needs a flashlight? Just spray and pray
(yes I do know actual spread is only about .5-1" per every 10 ft with a shortie and 00-buck)

Yes, Beretta owns Benelli...but they are not nearly the same. Beretta is gas operated, Benelli is recoil operated. I wouldn't risk swapping parts between the two.

The 1200FP is recoil operated. Same action as the Benelli. The bruise on my shoulder told me so. ;)
Here is some info on the 1200.... http://www.berettaweb.com/semi%20auto%20shotgun/1200.htm
Here are some pictures of the 1201FP...
http://world.guns.ru/shotgun/SH27-E.HTM
The only difference in the 1200FP and 1201FP is that the 1201 has a 3" chamber. Mine has the rifle sights, and standard style stock.
