View Full Version : New Gillette Razor

So Gillette is releasing a new razor on June 6th. I just saw a commercial for it. I guess that it will have six blades. I also think that since that is the anniversary of D-Day, they should call it the Ike.

How many blades can a razor have before it is regulated by the MSP? Come on, 6 blades, only the military and police are able to handle something like that in the proper manner.:sarcasm:

These guys are worse than crack dealers. They keep coming up with razors with more and more blades. They will almost give you the razor, then charge you $5 each for the blades...and they give you a crappy shave and irritate the hell out of your skin.

Several years ago, I started shaving with a double edge razor and brush with shaving soap. Best shaves and zero irritation. Oh, and the blades cost $.25 each, so I can change them after two or three shaves...Old school baby.

Yeah, I use one occasionally. Way too much of a learning curve and time consuming for me to do everyday. Plus you need to be really good at sharpening the straight. Takes a lot of skill and practice.

I didn't think you used a razor anymore? The ball and chain get after you?

I used that a LOT in my youth. It was embarrassing picking up my date with blood SOAKED toilet paper all over my face while picking up my date. :o;)

Ain't nothing wrong with June 6th...tis a good birthday...being born on the 44th anniversary of it, almost to the "T" (born at 6:36am)!

Any more than two blades and the blades are so close together you spend half the time clearing them. Six blades would be six times the pita.

No need to buy fancy soap, I just lather up with bar soap. And I've found that shaving is easiest post shower when your beard is soft.

I can't use anything with more than 3 blade. 4 or more involves a lot of hair being pulled from my face and so much getting stuck in the blades it doesn't cut anymore.

There was a time, when the idea of a "3-bladed" razor was considered a joke, and SNL even did a parody TV commercial about it.

Hint - if you can't get a decent shave with a 4, 3, or even 2-bladed razor... it's because the blades are crap.

Yep. The DE blades I use are Feathers brand. Japanese surgical steel. Sharp as a Mofo.

I've always wanted to learn how to shave with an old-school straight razor...anyone out there use one?

I've been using straights for a little over a year. Started with the double edge, good brush and creams a couple years ago and moved to straights after I left the Merkur double-edge at my in-laws. I'd been thinking about it for awhile, and figured that was a sign.

There is a bit of a learning curve, and it takes longer. But I like to take my time and enjoy it. I like learning new skills, and I'm still experimenting with new angles and grips.

I'd recommend either of these two sites if you're interested:

Although I really respect grb's 'old school' razor, I have to admit that my neck skin gets ripped up and bloody, so I'm stuck with using one of those fancy Braun electric shavers.

Protesters erupt in riots upon hearing the news that Gilette has once again delayed the release of it's Ultra 6 Razor by three weeks:

I have one of those Braun electric shavers too, but I've stopped using it. It really wasn't giving me that close shave that would last more than a few hours. I'm using disposables but one thing that makes shaving so much better is Burt Bee's Aftershave. I don't have hardly as much shaving bumps. Every blue moon I'll bust out the Burma Shave cup and brush.

If I ever start shaving again, I'm probably gonna try my hand at the straight razor. This will likely lead to significant blood loss and increased ugliness.

I used to use one of those "Mach 3" deals, but the blades didn't last long and they were stupid expensive. To think, all that money I spent on blades could have easily been beer or ammo...

I switch back and forth between the Mach 3 and Quatro. Both do a great job for me and the blades last (stupid expensive is right though!). I carry a Norelco in the car for touch ups in the afternoon or when I miss something which does happen lol.

Gotta try a double edge.....25 per blade seems niiiiice.

25 cents are for the expensive ones!

These are < .15 including shipping. I got about 5 good shaves from them.

Derbys are good as well Johnny. I just like the Feathers. They are scary sharp. I get about 3-4 shaves from a Derby and 5-6 from a Feather. I had a friend that went to Istanbul a few months ago and he brought back about 1,500 Derbys...He hooked me up. :party29:

If some of you guys have problems with razor burn, bumps, etc. try a double edge and shave cream / soap and a brush. Once you get the knack, you will NEVER use a multi-blade razor again. Or an electric for that matter.

I use a disposable on face damp from the shower. Can't use soap because I can't see my beard line, so I just scrape away. The disposables get dull after a while, but I use each one for a month at least.

My grandfather, long deceased, had a gadget that would hold the (double-edge) blade in a handle sort of thing, with one edge exposed. He had a strop hanging from the wall, and would re-use his blades for a looong time. Cheap runs deep in my family.

I started out with electric, but they pinched the h*ll out of my face.

I use a Merkur HD double edge safety razor. Blades last about a week and 100 of them are $20.

I did use a straight razor for a while but found it to be more trouble than it's worth.

I can use most any razor, but; and maybe its just me, but i dont need any any shaving cream or anything, just wet the razor and shave with it, my skin can be kinda oily anyway so i guess thats why i dont need shaving cream or aftershave, just never used it.

When I shave (not very frequently), I use either of the Gillette DE Safety razors that were my grandfather's. I have a badger brush and Tom's of Maine shave cream. Having a decent brush definitely makes a huge difference when shaving. Any electric razor destroys my neck, along with most of the multi blade modern razors. Slow and steady with the DE safety razor and badger brush usually results in a pretty close, non-inflamed shave. A good aftershave balm (not the alcohol based smelly liquids) is also a good idea if you have sensitive skin.

I've been wanting to try shaving with a straight razor, but I can't bring myself to spend the coin on a decent blade and all the equipment to maintain it. A 10-20 cent double edge is much easier to handle anyway.

I've been thinking about trying a double-edge...

Why is the brush necessary? And is "regular" shaving cream/lotion fine?

This post brings back memories of my dad using a double-edge. I remember standing at the sink watching him with his brush and shaving soap.
Best day of my life was when he gave me a shaving set like his in 1970, when I began shaving my "peach-fuzz".

I've found that shaving is easiest post shower when your beard is soft.I agree about the post-shower.

I use a brush with Talbac soap cakes and Altra blades.

I then

prepare the soap by heating some water to a boil in the microwave
place the brush in the mug (the mug is metal, and is actually the bottom half of a French Coffee mug)
pour the water over the brush
jump in the shower
wet my face with warm water
brush the lather on
The lather is then both warm and moist.

The soap is cheap - $11.00 or so for 5 to 6 months (if you buy enough at one time on the Web to get free shipping), and nothing gets wasted, since when you replace the soap cake, you toss the remainder of the last one on top.

Get the best shave ever.
