View Full Version : AK Group Build: Thread 4 Parts Kits

Drmsparks
November 15th, 2007, 10:20 AM
Hello,

As part of the AK Build party, we need to get a feel for who needs to buy a parts kit. We may or may not get a deal buying in bulk.

Please post to this thread what type of parts kits you are looking for and we can see what we can do.

The recommended parts kit for this build is the Romanian G kit. It's the cheapest currently out there and of good quality.

If you desire an exotic configuration this kit can be customized with alternative stocks (side or underfolder or AR style or Galil)

If you are in for the build and need a parts kit and are willing to participate in a group buy please post here how many and what type you are looking for.

Once we have a count, we can contact some vendors for pricing.

Thanks,

Dave

I'd like to build a Polish underfolder, but if the general consensus is the Romy G kit, that's what I'll build.

Honestly, not to spark a panic or anything, but kits are drying up everywhere... I just bought 2 for myself.

My little brother is still looking for one however, so put me down for 1 kit.

There are minimal differences in the build between the various types of AK's.

If you want a specialty type rifle (underfolder etc) there are two primary ways to build the rifle.

1) buy the kit for that rifle.
2) buy the cheap kit you can find and a separate kit for the stock.

Above all build the rifle you want. Don't build a rifle you're not as interested in just because it's simpler. These kits won't be around for ever.

Contemplate this and revise your numbers as appropriate.

The next question is when do we want to buy the kits? Sooner is better but Christmas is coming....

This is the biggest reason I think buying kits individually is probably going to be the way to go, but I'm willing to participate in a group buy if one is organized.

Numidian, I agree.

We should buy the parts kits sooner then later.

However, based on earlier discussions, when the build was first suggested, we should buy as much stuff after xmas as possible- several members mentioned money would be tight due to the holidays.

Lets do the parts kit demil after the holidays (because that is when we will all be together and can meet the FFL and order the receivers) and order the compliance kits as well.

I tried the copes web site and can order the romy kits listed at the bottom of the page (114 with FLAT RATE 7.99 shipping regardless of the number ordered. Thats a savings of $8 per member right there)

BTW we are up to 11 romy parts kits, possibly -2 if two members interested in underfolders change to those kits.

I also recieved my classic arms kits today.

Barrels look brand new. Paper wrapped inside, strong lands and grooves, like new chrome shiny. Metal finish eastern block so-so, wood, crappy laminate as typical).

1986 kits, EP "G", kinda sloppy- I'll grind mine off.

All in all excellent condition.

Numidian

Doing compliance packages in early January should be fine.

Or if we have enough people interested right now, we could do a buy now and one in January.

Get the kits now while you still can. Compliance parts will still be available for a long time.

I just got 2 "G" kits from copes, both dated 1978 and in good condition. One has a mismatched bolt and carrier, but i can deal with that. Exellent furniture. Copes has a flat rate of 7.95 for shipping, so in theory you could order 20 kits and have them all shipped for that price.

So far we are looking at 11 parts kits.

We have good reviews from both copes, classic arms and ak47s.com

the copes kits are the cheapest at $119 a piece.

With shipping that would be $120.00 a piece.

How soon do we want to order them and how do we want to do the payment?

p.s. ... They have gone up $5 since yesterday....

How are the barrels?

If they look good...we are looking at the romy kits at Copes, and if not, the kits from Classic arms.

Reminder- some kits from copes will not have matching parts.....

I'm willing to collect the money and order the kits. I'd like everyone to say they agree with the purchase and I'll place the order. So far jas, gibby and h2u look like they are in.

As long as the barrel isn't a sewer pipe - it will be OK. Come on - it's an AK - if it were perfect, it just wouldn't be right.
With that being said, I just bought a Yugo M90 kit in .223 (unissued and de-milled w/underfolder and chrome barrel marked 1997 :D)

The barrels on the copes kits this week look great, crisp and shiny. The 2 i got last year still had paper in them. They always say 5% will be non matching, its not a big deal to me, i have the headspace gauges and drill press to make anything work.

Slayr,

We are going to do the receivers, the demill and the build after the new year. A few of us are getting nervous about the rapid disappearance of existing parts kits and the increasing prices.

We won't be saving much on parts kits by buying bulk (so far just most of the shipping or about $7.00 per order ). But if they run out they run out, and if new kits don't have barrels thats another 50-75$ per AK.

We don't want anyone to miss out on the build because of the holidays!

We can do two separate group buys on parts kits(one before and and after the holidays) and individuals can always buy their own parts kits- some of the members have already bought their kits(I have) and some had them to start with.

I was just curious because of the century kits. I am definitely not getting involved in magazine issues or buys. As my understanding goes Md residents cannot bring mags in from out of state. It's a good thing I bought a bunch a long time ago.

EDIT: classic arms is advertising blems (surface issues only) for $99.00! I'm going to refinish anyway so will probably get one of those. They seem willing to make a bunch of deals, I'm going to see if they will work a price on the good kits...

Yeah me too - I had two Romanian G kits just sitting around waiting on some time to build them that I got from Copes a month or so back...I ordered 2 more kits from dpharms - they should arrive tomorrow. I wonder if there will be a difference in the quality. My kits from Copes were in OK shape.

I'm leaning toward tacti-cool myself. I like the saw grip but I'm also checking out the "AK-47 Interchangeable 6 piece Pistol Grip"http://www.parts4ak47.com/ak-47_accessories/product/CAA-UPG47.html also are the recievers milled or stamped I noticed while I was checking out different furniture sets they had kits for both.

I didn't mean to imply rails...

If mine has a rail, it will be a single light rail only and a small one at that. I may put an aimpoint on it with the rear sight mount.

By tacticool, I was leaning towards the synthetic fiberglass look. Perhaps EBR would be a better adjective....

Cope's is officially out of the Romy kit business. I guess you got yours from Classic. They had the best prices next ro Copes. Not that it matters, but did you notice they had Bulgarian AK bayonets in their unadvertised spacial section for $15 ea.? You can get the Romy bayonets cheaper elsewhere, anyway. One thing for sure, these kits are starting to run out with some dealers. I heard that some Class II FFL's were buying up kits to assemble later
for sale, totally built. When the kits come in from wherever I would be curious to hear what they are like.

I have built 3 AK-47 kits (including a Polish underfolder and 2 Romanian) and a Bulgarian AK-74. You sort of get addicted. For the price the Romanian kits are the best "bang for the buck". As they say, once you have the basic platform you can pimp them out to your hearts content.

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd200/drmsparks/ak/blems.jpg

The worst:

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd200/drmsparks/ak/worst.jpg

I had to search really hard to find the blems- they are not labeled as such from classic.

The kits are a mix of late 70's to mid 1980's. Two of the kits had brand new barrels. The only kit with evidence of firing (copper fouling on the muzzle brake) was placed with the blems.

They all look really good. I did not tear apart all the bags and graded the kits solely on the front half.

Individual emails to follow with balance due...

ok,

Everyone should have received a PM about their kits.

As far as distribution goes- I plan on letting everyone choose blindly- luck of the draw.

That said, there are certain requests we can try to accommodate if possible...if you want a certain year we can try to do that.

Drmsparks
November 29th, 2007, 08:34 PM
They really don't look bad. The one with the copper fouling on the brake looks a little dirty but smooth. It should clean up nicely. There is minor wear on the bolt face.

With the exception of the one with the copper fouling I had a hard time deciding which were the blems.

Looks like we're all in the same boat. I have an m72 and m90 with no receivers available. I just missed the m90 receiver buy (I'll start looking for these on auction sites) and the m72 is supposed to be coming in January from Nodak.

Here's another option, but I don't know what to expect.

I need 3 of these for my M72, M70, and Romanian RPK.

If I had any money in my savings I'd pull it out and put it into those parts kits...turn around and sell them in 6 months for $50 more probably

Might check with Copes. I gather they plan to import kits w/O barrels [might have already] when these give out.

Thanks for the tip. I am "gathering". I'm in for a reciever for myself, and one for the wife, will get the rest as the cashflow permits.

I cant get this to embed because its from Blutube, but it is an interesting view, even with the too-loud music.
It is entitled Outtakes of the making of a Christmas present.

This is off the gunboards.com forum. Considering the extras this is not a bad deal. Most of the Romy kits run about this now, without the extras.
