Recommend A Taxidermist To Me In So. Md. ok, so I have this 8 pointer, now who would you go to for the mount?
Don't even mention Bushey's to me.
And I won't afford Griffith.
How about Creative Whitetails?
How about Evan's?
How about Fur Ever?
How about John Mathews?
Anybody else around Southern Maryland?
I want to make a decision within the next few days.

Don't know about any of these people. Its going to take a really nice 10-12 pointer for me to think about the going price for their services. I have a couple of 8s and a 10 pt non-typical that I saved the skull cap or am going for a 'European' style mount of just the skull (ie bare bones:)). Just my .02 worth.
I'll ask around for some suggestions from other that have gotten some mounts.
If I knew how to post pictures, I'd show my 10 pt from the first day of muzzle season.

The house that I currently live in I bought from Creative Whitetail, his name is Dean Ursitti. I can tell you his stuff looked good to me, he had the garage full of it when I was looking at it. I think he moved to somewhere near LaPlata. I still get catalogs in the mail for him. Anyway, I dont know any of the others, and he never did anything for me, but the garage, which was his workshop, was filled with great looking work, and lots of ribbons and tropheys.

Yeah I got a quote from him a few hours ago and he wanted $495.00, so, that makes him the highest out of 4 taxidermists on the quote list so far. The cheapest I have at this point is $430.00
I'm waiting on a few other guys to call me back, so, we'll see what happens.

I don't know how familiar you are with the Euro mounts, but, as along as you're not afraid of losing the original spread to shrinkage when the skull dries, then you have no worries, but, if you hang on one the wall, hang it high so you don't have to lay on the floor to appreciate it. I'm not a fan of Euro mounts after my father had one done and a few other guys I know did it out of cost, I would more than willing be paying for a full mount.

before you decide on price alone go tot eh shop and look at the work he/she is doing. talk to people and get how you are treated.
I have seen some mounts look very poorly done because the hunter went with the cheapest around.
I have several Friends that told me about Sonny and I saw the work he can do in his shop. I didn't go over the mounts he had with fine tooth comb but from what I saw was very good.
He gave me a 8 month turn around time. got my 8 pt deer.
He was very honest with me. I had a older deer that had been fighting and had a lot of scars and marks on him he even had a eye missing from fighting. he told me he will not be able to make the deer look smooth but he will do the bes the could do with it.
With an old deer with battle scars I wouldn't expect the deer to look smooth . it just adds to him.

I absolutely agree, I have not ruled Sonny out, I know him personally, just open to options is all, price is a factor, If it were quality of work, then I would not hesitate to ship it to Griffith, I've had several done by him, but, now that he's in Kentucky and not up the street, the shipping fees are steering me away from him, the price is not the issue I should mention, it's the best middle of the road choice with what we have in the area.

I have selected a Taxidemist, most guys would not even call me back and some of these guys do this on the side, so, I picked a guy who calls me back and does it full time. Went and looked at some of their work, and the cheaper of the 2 does 10X better work. I appreciate the input in the matter.

When I clicked "new posts" this morning, I was quite amused when I saw these two threads together.

I did a lot of traveling, looked at a lot of mounts and asked a lot of questions. I just want everyone to realize, getting a deer mounted is nothing new to me, I have seen a lot of work from local taxidermists and I based my decision on a lot of factors. I've seen it all, poor eye references, upside down eyes, pull marks in the hair, stitch lines in the throat area, crooked antlers, acid burns, lots of acid burns... you name it. I looked at about 30-40 deer he has in his showroom and they were all perfect, I have even looked at some deer that he has done for past customers and they were basically flawless examples.
I decided to go with Evan's Taxidermy. Evan is a straight forward guy, he does it full time for a living, and he has the most impressive work I have seen since Griffith Taxidermy left the state. I'd personally prefer not to have a part time taxidermist do my work, If the man can do it as a career and not just a side job, then he's the one I want, it's my personal requirement, so, we won't harp on the subject.
He answers his phone, returns my calls promptly, and basically is the only one who showed interest in working for me, everyone else seemed to not care, felt they already had too much work, funny thing is, none of the other guys had nearly as much work lined up as this guy did. As busy as he is, and he still has time to talk to a customer...
I'm not surprised that this man does not openly advertise, it appears he doesn't have to. His price was excellent and his work was even better. If I remember, in many, many months, I'll let everyone know how it turned out.
