Just some friendly advice, most of the surplus around now is POF, and it is really cheap, but horrible ammo, you ae guaranteed to get at least 1 or 2 duds per box, most of the rest hang fire badly, some take about 5 seconds to fire. I tried some, and ended up pulling the bullets and using them to roll my own ammo with. British and S. African is good stuff, but dried up years ago. There is new manufactured Wolf gold/Privi, Win and Rem ammo too that is accurate, and all around good stuff, all three make soft point ammo good for deer, Rem and Privi also makes relatively inexpensive but really nice FMJ ammo. Being that a good bore will shoot .311 bullets very well, it is easy to find many choices for bullets to load, one of my favorites is 123gr FMJ intended for 7.62X39 over a moderate charge of Varget, it makes for a very light recoiling and accurate load that shoots about the same trajectory as standard 174gr military loads out to about 300 yards.

Most of the stuff you're going to find is either going to be expensive or flat out garbage like alucard said. Your best bet might be something like Prvi Partizan or just reloading the ammo on your own. Stay waaaaaaaay clear of that POF crap....just about everyone I've seen shoot it has had hang fires galore.

Shoot a pm to JSW. I bought some Prvi from him a while ago and I've been very happy with it.

o, my aching ass! I think I will squash my SMLE lust for now and get me another Mauser or a Finn Mosin that I'm not too cheap to shoot. Thanks for the prompt replys fellas, even tho you guys suck for not having a secret stash of .303 to sell to your new BFF Mista Houserocka.:D

FWIW all I ever shoot is the old POF surplus stuff in all three of mine. I bought like 1300 rounds of that stuff back when it was cheap. I must have gotten lucky. Have never had a hangfire or ftf. Dirty, but goes bang every time for me and accurate.

Aw, that's a shame Houserocker. You'd really enjoy a SMLE IMHO. But ammo availability isn't like it is for Mosins or Mausers.
Since I have some Tok ammo put away for your "HR stopped smoking" valuable prize, least I can do is offer up some starting out factory .303 ammo in it's place. Heck, I could help you learn to reload for it. But then you'd have to get a reloading press and stuff and you'd end up reloading for your Mosins and Mausers too. That's likely more time than either of us have. :sad20:
But you're still welcome to shoot my Enfields if you get my dead ass to the next shoot. :)

Thanks JT, as usual, you are really cool and you are right, you DO need to get your ass to a shoot! I would be very happy to have you learn me the joys of rolling my own ammo. Maybe once the summer is over, there will be the time for such an exercise to take place, PM me when you get a chance.
As for the rest of you, quit making me change my mind, or I will take my $ and buy a fine vintage tube amplifier, that I will proceed to discuss on another forum with a bunch of guitar playing Rednecks! I mean it........

jsw is good to buy from and very reasonable prices. :)
HR, to hand load .303's (not counting the initial equipment of course) it'd run maybe $8.50 to $9 per box of 20. Heck of a lot better than factory prices and it'll be non-corrosive to boot.
Figure 35 cents or so for cases. If you use a case 5 times that's 7 cents per load (I get more uses than that). Primer = 3 1/2 cents at today's high prices. Prvi 150 gr bullets are about 17 cents each. Add 40 grains or so of a suitable powder. At $26 per pound retail (ridiculous) that's another 15 cents per load. So 7+3.5+17+15=42.5 per round give or take and depending on shipping costs. If you shop around for components and/or buy in bulk, it can be MUCH less than that.
You can still buy a Lee Anniversary press kit for around $100 and a set of Lee .303 dies for about $25, Not the best press in the world, but it'll load a bunch of .303's just fine. And BTW, those .311 bullets? - Mosins eat them too.
Food for thought before you give up on a SMLE because of ammo.

Heck, I find N/C 303 ammo from time to time at area gunshows. It's still around.

Surprising enough .303 Brit is pretty easy to find. Gun Shops, Bass Pro Shops, etc. carry it in stock. I do see .303 surplus in cheaper than dirt from time to time, and many other sources.
