View Full Version : WTF is this in my magazine tube?

Just picked up a used Mossberg 500 yesterday and stripped it down tonight to give it a thorough cleaning. In doing so I noticed something odd. There was a wooden dowel with 2 o rings in the mag tube. I could hear something rattling around in there then when I was moving it the end of the dowel came out.

Why would this be in my magazine tube? Is it a DIY fix for something? Does it limit the magazine capacity?

plug for hunting. thats it. sounds like you got it out ok. trash it if you plan on not hunting with it or stash it away for later use.

I'm not a hunter but could you explain what the plug/dowel is used for? how many rounds can you have in the tube?

When you are limited by hunting regs to less rounds than your magazine can potentially hold you have to install some type of insert in your magazine that cannot be ejected.

Limit's the magazine capacity to 2 rds (1 in chamber) for DNR happiness. :)

They also work great for sticking in your Mosin to fire at the dog. (remember to remove before firing a real round) ;)

When bird hunting, only 3 shells in the gun. Two in the tube, one in the pipe.

Thanks for the help guys. I kinda feel like and idiot now :o. It's just when I heard plug I was really thinking something totally different than a piece of wood and a couple o rings.

Waterfowl rules mandate the use of a shotgun with a maximum magazine capacity of 2 shells in addition to the one you've got in the chamber. Any shotgun with a larger mag must have a plug installed to limit the capacity, and the plug must require tools to install/remove it.

Groovy!!! learn something new everyday. I guess that's why belt fed shotguns aren't allowed for hunting foul.

THANKS to all that responded.

You're not an idiot, when I think of a mag plug i'm not thinking a piece of wood either, lol.
Had to remove one in my Beretta 391 when I bought it, but that one wasn't wood, heh.

So I guess we don't know a lot about shotguns.....or read the owner's manual. Should be in there. This is basic stuff guys.

Also remember to remove the real round before firing the dowel. :D

It was just a joke, but if you take the o-rings off of the dowel and slide the dowel down the barrel with the firing pin cocked, if the dowel is resting against the bolt, the firing pin will dribble it out of the barrel a whopping 4-5 feet.

Hey I guess that'd be easy if used shotguns came with a manual. This is my first shotgun so ESAD. Better to ask and learn then not ask at all right?

the owners manual has it but its easily overlooked b/c its under magazine capacity not under loading magazine. i skipped the capacity section because i already knew what it could hold, they should make it step one.

so did dan or who had it first re-install it to sell it?

As noted elsewhere, it is not DNR but a Federal rule.

sje0123, Remington used a nice plastic plug, not sure if they still do or not, been a while since I saw a new Remington plug.

It's both, actually, depending on the game.

if ever in a jam & dont have the plug , a unsharpend #2 pencil will work.

It's a bright green right? I remember seeing one before. I guess it's the simplicity of the design that threw me off. I was expecting something similar to the Remington not just a piece of wood.

"Most" regulations in "most" States limit you to three shots for hunting. There are exceptions in some areas that allow you to hunt with an unplugged gun. Right now in Maryland you can hunt light geese with an unplugged gun during a special extended season. You can even use a mag extension. Don't throw out the plug, as you never know when you might have the opportunity (or invitation) to go hunting. Most plugs are plastic, some are metal. Honestly, I didn't think that anyone used wood any longer. Simple and serves the purpose though.

It's both, actually, depending on the game.

I have never hunted in MD, just big game in NY. For deer in NY they did not restrict mag capacity. (At least normal capacity, never saw anyone with an 870 and an extended mag in the field.)

I do think the Remington plug is green. The 870's and 1100's have a larger opening where the plug goes. At least with the Mossberg if you lose the plug, you can make a new one at home.

You should enjoy the 500. I have owned two at different points and they just worked. (sold the second to help fund the purchase of an auto loader.) The 500 is not as pretty as an 870 but they are nice guns.
